The unexpected benefit of family pictures

There are probably as many reasons to invest family pictures as there are families in Pekin, Peoria, and Central Illinois. But perhaps the most important reason is our children.

Taking the time to schedule family pictures, and then displaying those family pictures in your home, actually helps your children develop positive self esteem.

Why is that important? Children with positive self esteem:

  • Feel more confident and capable,

  • Can better handle making mistakes, and are willing to try again,

  • Are more successful at home, school, and with friendships,

  • And have better stress management and stronger values.

What does printing and displaying family pictures have to do with self-esteem?

Memories. Family pictures can help remind our children of happy memories. Think about how you feel when you come across old pictures from your childhood. Can't you almost smell the smells and feel the feels that were happening at exactly that time in your life? Displaying family pictures helps remind our children of happy memories and can actually bring back those positive and loving feelings they experienced at the time the pictures were taken. And when your child is feeling stressed or depressed (which happens to everyone from time to time), seeing those family pictures, reminding them of how loved they are, can help bring back those positive vibes. Displaying family pictures from a day of laughter and love and hugs and tickles can help our children to understand that the bad times won't last forever. Besides, it's also an incredible way for our kids to see how much they've grown.

Belonging. What better way can we remind our kids that they belong in our family? Seeing their family pictures can remind them that they are loved. Professor Geoff Beattie, Dean of Psychological Sciences at the University of Manchester, says, “For children in particular, looking at photographs is part of the socializing process, learning who you are and where you fit into the family. By displaying photographs of our children at different stages of their lives, we are making a very public statement that we are proud of them.”

Preserving your family history. We all have hundreds (thousands?) of pictures of our kids on our phones. But digital media is always changing. Do you know where your phone pictures are from the phone you had 5 years ago? When is the last time you looked at them? In 20 years, will your children ever be able to see them? This is why it’s so important to print our family pictures for our children, and their future children, and generations to come. There's just nothing quite like looking at family pictures from generations past.

When is the last time YOUR family was professionally photographed? I'd love to be your Pekin or Peoria Area Family Photographer.
